چکیده
We describe the use of HPLC with muitiwavelength detection to measure retinol, a-tocopherol, Iutein/zeaxanthin, f3-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, a-carotene, trans-p-carotene, /3-carotene, and the linoleate, oleate, palmitate, and stearate esters of retinol in a single 200L serum sample. The method is sensitive enough to detect individual retinyl esters in fasting serum from a nonhyperlipidemic population and requires only 12 mm for each sample. Serum concentration ranges and means are reported for retinol, a-tocopherol, lutein/zeaxanthin, /3-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, a-carotene, trans-/3-carotene, and the sum of the retinyl esters from serum analyses of 3480 participants from several different studies.

Simultaneous determination of vitamins A and E and carotenoids in plasma by reversed-phase HPLC in elderly and younger subjects.
A reversed-phase high-performance liquid-chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of retinol, alpha-tocopherol, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene is described. This method was applied to plasma measurements in healthy young and elderly subjects. The plasma, deproteinized with ethanol, is extracted twice with n-hexane. After evaporatio...
متن کاملMicronutrient concentrations in paired skin and plasma of patients with actinic keratoses: effect of prolonged retinol supplementation.
Much of our knowledge about the relationship between micronutrients and cancer comes from studies in which plasma (serum) micronutrient levels have been correlated with cancer incidence; however, the relationship between the concentrations of micronutrients in the plasma and in the target tissues has not been established. Ninety-three subjects (62 males and 31 females ages 42-86, median age 69)...
متن کاملReference values for retinol, tocopherol, and main carotenoids in serum of control and insulin-dependent diabetic Spanish subjects.
To establish reference ranges for use in clinical and epidemiological studies, we determined concentrations of retinol, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene in 450 Spanish control subjects and 123 Spanish patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Results were grouped according to sex, and samples were collected thr...
متن کاملPrediagnostic levels of serum micronutrients in relation to risk of gastric cancer in Shanghai, China.
Data on blood levels of specific carotenoids and vitamins in relation to gastric cancer are scarce. Little is known about the relationship between prediagnostic serum levels of carotenoids other than beta-carotene and risk of gastric cancer especially in non-Western populations. Prediagnostic serum concentrations of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin,...
متن کاملDietary carotenoids, serum beta-carotene, and retinol and risk of lung cancer in the alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene cohort study.
Findings from several beta-carotene supplementation trials were unexpected and conflicted with most observational studies. Carotenoids other than beta-carotene are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables and may play a role in this important malignancy, but previous findings regarding the five major carotenoids are inconsistent. The authors analyzed the associations between dietary beta-car...
